Honeywell Infant & Nursery School, Wandsworth
The teaching staff were fundamentally concerned with creating an area which optimised the opportunities for children to learn and play.
They also wanted to improve the aesthetic appearance of the outdoor play area. In short, they wanted to retain the creative, open-ended and child-centred feel to the outside learning area whilst giving more opportunities for children to learn through play.
The structure of the outside area was well established with zones that included muddy digging areas, social areas, quite places to sit and more physically active areas.
With this in mind, we were able to save money for the school by using the area in a similar way and doing some subtle enhancements to the landscape to increase the play and learning potential.
To improve the zoning we starting with the floor, incorporated artificial grass, Tiger Mulch and colourful wet pour rubber. This not only looked more attractive, but also improved safety. We also installed a bespoke toddler play tower that included mirror play panels, Play huts, an improved digging area, a balance and coordination area and finally a garden planting area for the children to grow their own veg.
“ Already we have superheroes launching themselves down from our new fort at the same time as Rapunzel is being rescued from her castle, our new boat promotes journeys to far-away lands or going on holiday, while others adopt the role of treasure-seeking pirates; one prop naturally feeds their lively imaginations in a multitude of ways. ”
