St William’s Primary School – Play Ship
The brief was really led by the children. They wanted a space they could play with children of all ages, using their imagination or just sitting chatting with their friends. The children wanted to completely change their playground so that it wasn’t completely dominated by football.
It was clear from the brief that a complete transformation of the hard playground was needed.
To achieve this we listened to the school (especially the children!) to understand what was required.
A themed outside area that included a bespoke play ship that has now become the Blakeney play ship, palm tree features and real rock boulders for a desert island theme and yellow and blue wet pour rubber surfacing with star fish and crab graphics.
“ The children have told the school governors that the pirate ship has had a huge impact on their playtimes, more than any other change we have made in our school grounds or building. They now play happily with children from other age groups and say that children are kinder and more friendly in the school as a result. ”
