The existing playground equipment was 25 years old and in need of replacement, the play area was well loved so we had our work cut out!
As with all play area designs working closely with the local children and community was a key element of the project, after an initial consultation the area to be developed was agreed.
Next was the really tough meeting with the local school council! The children really enjoyed looking at and discussing different pieces of playground equipment and the play value they included. We came away with a really good impression of what the local children really wanted from their new play area.
Armed with the children’s feedback final designs were proposed including items that had as much play value as we could design into the area and covering as wider age range as possible. We got the thumbs up from the children and then the playground committee worked extremely hard to access the funding and the project was up and running.
“ “It has taken the four village partners to complete the project, Great and Little Thurlow Parish Councils, Thurlow Sports Club and Thurlow Estate, and two years to see the project come to fruition. Along with the help from Action Play & Leisure we are delighted with the finished play area. ” Allan Loveday, Thulrow Sports Club secretary
The upgrades mean residents and visitors to the recreation ground will be able to park more safely instead of on the main road during winter months, when space was more restricted.
Mr Loveday said the village partners were thankful to Essex & Suffolk Water and Farrans (Construction), but also St Edmundsbury Council, Cllr Midwood (county council locality budget), Suffolk Foundation and Thurlow Fayre Committee who have provided grant funding and donations.
